LOOMIS and Other Classic Instructors

Here are free downloadable classic drawing and illustration books in PDF format. This material simply isn’t taught in schools and art classes anymore! IT’S THE REAL DEAL- if you love to draw but are frustrated,  HAVE A LOOK, DOWNLOAD and better yet, DO THESE EXCERSISES! I call it “Pencil Yoga”.

These books are in the public domain and came from archive.org.  I’ve simply made them easier to find by putting them here. Yeah, the text in these books makes it appear that women didn’t study art in the 1940s and were only models, but we know that isn’t true.  Bypass the sexist language and light your inner fire with the information!

Some of these books are new to me, and are mind blowing (to me). The Art of Composition, for example, is a book that I’ve been looking for all my life, but only found it days ago. Some, like the Loomis books, I used to own in print. Sadly, those hard copies are gone, but now we have PDFs, thankfully!

This page is updated as I find more relevant books.  If you know of a copyright-free book that should be here, please let me know.

“We have the common ground of knowing that the things I shall attempt to talk about are of tremendous importance to both of us, to our mutual success - since I intend to remain as active as possible in the field. I wish you to succeed as much as I wish to succeed myself, for the sake of our craft, which is more important than we are."
